NOVEMBER 2019 - 2

We enjoyed a good day at the Skipton Sale where there was an excellent entry of cattle and good results.  Shawhill Mayflower took a first prize and sold for 3,000gns.  In the same class, Shawhill Marina stood second and sold for 1,700gns.  At 2,500gns, we sold Shawhill Hermione Meghan and our white heifer, Shawhill Moonlight made 1,500gns.

We thank all our purchasers and wish them every success.

We have a bull and four maiden heifers heading for the Stirling Sales on Monday 21st October.

The bull, Shawhill Moondust (H) (633805562) is a red son of Diamond Lord Belmore who is by the Australian breed legend, The Grove Kookaburra. Moondust's dam is a Shawhill Dewdrop Futurama daughter by the high-index Glenisla Zetor.

The four well-bred poll heifers are Shawhill Foxglove Maisie (643851109), Shawhill Melania (643851110), Shawhill Chelsea Marie (643851716) and Shawhill Dee Marigold (643851878). We have been taking the pelvic measurements of our heifers as a predictor of calving ease and all these four cattle are well above average, ranging between 195cms and 232cms.

AUGUST 2019 - 2

A successful society supported sale of pedigree Beef Shorthorns took place at Longtown on Bank Holiday Monday, including the Gregors herd dispersal.

Our maiden heifer Shawhill Dewdrop Molly (643851108) was champion in the show of heifers and went on to sell for 2,600gns. to Mr W.E. Dickin from Halifax, advised by Steven Johnson. We wish Mr Dickin every success with the herd that he is establishing.

Dumfries and Lockerbie Show saw a really good attendance of 38 quality Beef Shorthorns.  We were pleased to pick up two thirds and a fourth against stiff competition.  The champion was an excellent young heifer from Messrs Bradley Farmer.

SUMMER 2019 - 2

A visit to our farm, Pilmuir at Hawick, by the Scottish Beef Shorthorn Breeders Club went off very well.  Some fifty or so were in attendance with travellers from as far afield as Aberdeenshire.  It stayed dry and Matthew and Beth organised a good tour around - visiting Beef Shorthorns, Red Polls, commercial cows and the sheep.  Our visit was followed by lunch and a very interesting farm tour at Mountbenger, Yarrow, hosted by the Irving family.

SUMMER 2019 - 1

We had a small team, a young bull and two heifers, at both the Royal Highland and Great Yorkshire Shows.  An exceptional entry of Beef Shorthorns were forward at both events and we were happy just to pick up a mid range rosette or two.  The quality of Beef Shorthorns at the shows and the interest in them is tremendous and the breed certainly continues to go forward.

We were pleased with the appearance of both our heifers and received considerable comments about our bull Shawhill Maestro (P) 633805563.  April born last year, by Winalot Rodney out of Shawhill Dewdrop Futurama, he is developing well and boasts some exceptional EBV figures for growth and beef including +72 for 600 day weight, +4.5 for eye muscle & +2.3 for retail beef yield.

FEBRUARY 2019 - 1

We have two April 2017 born poll Beef Shorthorn bulls going to the multi-breed bull sale at LONGTOWN on Tuesday 12th March.

Shawhill Linesman (P) (633804687) is a nice roan bull by Shawhill Freedom, our all Canadian herd sire by K-Kim Freedom out of Braebank Dewdrop.  His dam is Lowther Foxglove 194, an Uppermill Sherlock daughter, out of a Glenisla Foxglove dam. Lowther Foxglove has bred very well for us with a cracking heifer calf born to her in 2018.

Our other entry is Shawhill Lancelot (P) 633804683.  He is also by Shawhill Freedom out of the Knowehead Warrior daughter, Fieldhouse Charmaine Flo 21.  The sire of our 12,000gns champion at the October Stirling sales was by Freedom out of a Knowehead Warrior dam.

The auctioneers have an arrangement whereby only half the purchase price of bulls need be paid on the day with the balance due on 31st May.

Also at this sale will be a number of pedigree Beef Shorthorn females including in calf heifers from ourselves and three very good in calf heifers from a breeder in Ayrshire.
